10 Do's and Don'ts on Cannabis Storage

You just walked into a dispensary and bought close to an ounce of weed and weed products in one visit - Yay!!! So when you get home, how will you preserve your investment?

Home storage is something that the new cannabis consumer is going to have to explore.  Keeping your marijuana fresh and potent is essential.  Just as you wouldn’t store your wine or beer in a hot garage, cannabis needs to be stored properly.

The first thing to know is a relative humidity (RH) of 55 to 62 percent in a contained environment is optimal for Cannabis storage.  Putting your weed in a Tupperware in the fridge with an apple slice is only going to produce moldy weed.  So here are some guidelines for preserving the life and potency of your cannabis. 

DO–use products like Integra or use hygrometers  to monitor and control RH levels

DO– store out of direct sunlight in a cool, dry place

DO – store in containers with a neutral charge, like glass jars. (NO plastic baggies!)

DO – separate your strains to maintain their individual flavor profiles

DO – store in airtight containers with an Integra packet to regulate moisture

DON’T– store in the refrigerator. The fluctuations in humidity will increase your chance of mold and mildew.

DON’T– store in the freezer. Freezing temperatures cause the fragile trichomes to become brittle and break off like little icicles when handled which will lessen potency.

DON’T – store in plastic bags or containers. Plastic often has a static charge that can attract precious trichomes. If you are taking it with you there are small containers that are now on the market that make it easier to travel.

DON’T – store above or around electronics or appliances that give off heat. Heat rises which is not optimal for your weed — instead, store your cannabis in a low cupboard, or shelf.

DON’T – use a tobacco humidor. Most humidors use cedar wood, which can influence the flavors of your cannabis. 

DO – look for the many exciting new ways to store your cannabis.
