Marijuana Entertainment: The Age of Aquarius

Posted on

Do you remember watching I Love Lucy episodes and thinking why are they in twin beds if they are married. Only to find out in the 50’s they couldn’t show a couple in the same bed or use the word “pregnant.” Did you know Lucy and Ricky were also the first “interracial” couple on TV?  Remember Marlo Thomas, in That Girl. She was single and living in her own apartment in NYC. This was ground breaking.

We’ve had all sorts of breakthroughs in TV history, but recently, like rapid fire, I started to notice something. More and more people were smoking weed on TV.   I felt like Lucy just moved from her twin beds with Ricky to a queen right there in front of me, it was earth shaking.

Never in my wildest dreams did I think that I’d see the day, when people were smoking weed on TV. As legalization is coming to the forefront, television, which reflects our time and trends, is becoming more bold. Shows on cable like The Affair and Transparent, show people getting high, but I almost fell out of my chair when I saw Agent Navabi and Aram, two Government Agents pass a joint in the car on the Blacklist.  I remember thinking, wow, smoking being shown in Prime Time, we really have come a long way.

But real people actually smoking on TV,  is a new frontier. You might be thinking how is this different from Weediquette, (one of my favorite shows). It’s just that I feel like Krishna is showing the why and how people have Marijuana in their lives. It’s more of an educational show. (Side Note: I really want his job!)

But this is a cooking show. A weed cooking show. We are watching educated, well dressed, well spoken, employed people getting wasted on TV! Okay, we are getting educated as well, but this left me speechless. After the first show several thoughts struck me:

1 - Wow there really is so much we don’t know about the properties of Marijuana. Then…

2 – I love that they are showing professional people getting high. Then…

3 – I can’t believe there is a show on TV where you are watching people actually getting completely stoned just for fun! Then…

4 – This is history right here.

Bong Appetite, is in a class all it’s own. The first show aired on Dec. 14th on Viceland. The concept is 10 dinner parties, featuring professional chefs, most of whom have not cooked with Marijuana, translating their specialties into infused dishes. Sometimes its for the aromatics, sometimes its for the CBD properties and sometimes it’s for the THC properties – they use all forms of the plant (watch it just to see their incredible Marijuana filled pantry) and then everyone at the dinner party gets progressively stoned! In the first episode they even did a dab between one of the courses. I don’t know how the host Abdullah keeps a straight face, oh wait, he doesn’t. By the end they are all laughing and having a great time and we’ve all learned something!

Is this the dawning of the Age of Aquarius? An age where we embrace some of the traits associated with Aquarius such as freedom, idealism, moderization, rebellion, and non conformity? I don’t really know but what I do know is everyone better strap themselves in because it looks like we are in for a wild ride!
